I selected this snowblower over the Ariens due to 1) Price - 37% off retail brought it significantly under the Ariens 30" Platinum 2) Hydrostatic Drive 3) Engine size, we get deep heavy snow at times and 4) Length, I like the compact design ... had a small area in garage for it and the Ariens would have been a very tight squeeze.
The good: 1 -4 above plus it pulls easy and starts on 1st or 2nd pull ... no need to mess with the electric start. Tires seem to grip well. Throws snow much greater distance than my 8hp yardman. I haven't experienced the augers pushing the snow out as the other poster mentions ... though, I only had my old yardman to compare and this eats snow much better, though, I wish it had the lighter, larger auger blades as the Ariens. Heated grips are nice. Chute controls work very well which was a feature I liked in the Ariens Platinum.
The not so good: I also had the engine oil leak upon delivery and will put a new fiber washer on it as after tightening, it still seeps out ... anoying. The unit is very heavy - 280lbs. With it being stubbier than the other snowblowers, it's difficult, without the leverage, to push down on the grips for quick turning and, yes, as the other poster mentions, the handles do have a disturbing amount of flex ... probably the same gauge steel as their lightest model (I may try taking off the weight bar to see if that helps). I also had to tie off the wires on the handlebars as they do make contact with the moving grip levers. Finally, due to the weight, it seems to leave more pronounced scrape marks in the concrete ... maybe I just need to adjust the skids?
I have not experienced the vibration and the noise is a little louder than my yardman, but I would expect that with the motor nearly twice as large.
In summary, as long as my engine doesn't come apart (I'll continue to watch the bolts) and the flex in the handlebars do not turn into a bend, then the rest is tolerable/fixable and for the price I paid, I'll be very happy with my purchase ... thus the 4 star rating. Should I have any new experiences with it, I'll try to update my post.
Recommendation - Buy with caution ... with reward, there's usually risk. The 30" Ariens Platinum would be a very good alternative if Length, No Hydrostatic Drive, and 30% more cost are not an issue.
